Privacy Policy
The Cave Biology Data Portal is operated by the Cave Bio Lab and Niemiller Nature LLC (“we”, “us”, “our”). We respect your privacy and collect only the personal information the site needs to work.
Information we collect
- Contact details you give us, such as your name, email address, affiliation, and ORCID, when you use a form or write to us
- The content of a data request, a contributed record, a contributed image/illustration, or a correction you submit
- Basic usage data such as pages visited and approximate location, through standard analytics
This site does not directly sell anything or process payments. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without parental consent.
How we use it
- To answer questions and respond to requests
- To assess and record requests for locality data, and to keep a record of what was shared and with whom
- To review, credit, and publish contributed records and species accounts
- To improve the site and understand which parts of it are used
We do not sell, trade, or rent personal information.
Requests for locality data
Because cave locality data are sensitive, we keep a record of who asked for it, what was shared, and when. That record is kept for as long as it is useful for data stewardship and is not used for any other purpose. It is not shared except when a landowner, agency, or contributor who supplied the underlying data requests information about the use of their records.
Contributors
If you write a species account or contribute records, your name, affiliation, and ORCID are published as part of the credit for that work. That is the point of contributing, and it is how the contribution becomes citable. Your email address is not published without your consent.
Cookies and analytics
The site uses cookies for basic functionality and may use analytics to understand how it is used. Cookies are not used for advertising or behavioral marketing. See the Cookie Policy for details and for how to change your choices.
Third-party services
We use trusted providers for hosting, forms, and analytics. They have access only to what they need to provide the service and are expected to protect it. Some set their own cookies under their own policies.
Species accounts link out to external databases such as GBIF, iNaturalist, and the IUCN Red List. Following those links takes you to sites we do not control.
Data security
We take reasonable steps to protect information, but no transmission over the internet is completely secure. By using this site, you acknowledge that.
Your rights
You may ask to see, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you, and to stop receiving non-essential messages. Write to info@cavebiology.org.
Published contributor credits and citations are part of the scientific record. We can remove a credit on request, but records that already cite an earlier version will continue to reference it.
Changes
We may update this policy. Changes are posted here with a revised date.
