  • Cave Bio Educator Workshop

5–6 December 2026 · Cave Bio Lab at The University of Alabama in Huntsville · Paint Rock Forest Research Center, Trenton, Alabama

A free two-day workshop for middle and high school science teachers using caves, karst, groundwater and subterranean life as contexts for standards-based teaching, aligned to the 2023 Alabama Course of Study: Science. Includes cave trips, lunch, and free on-site lodging. Limited to 20 places.

    Registration: 20 November 2026

  • NAU in Belize: Tropical Cave Ecology Field School

    2–9 January 2027 · Northern Arizona University · Belize

This intensive winter field course introduces students to the extraordinary biodiversity, conservation challenges, and cave ecosystems of Belize through hands-on research at Runaway Creek Nature Reserve (RCNR) and cave systems in the Cayo District. During the first phase of the course, students will assist with ongoing cave ecology research at RCNR, learning field techniques used by conservation biologists and cave ecologists to study biodiversity and environmental change. Activities include surveying cave-dwelling arthropods such as harvestmen and pseudoscorpions, servicing long-term temperature and humidity monitoring stations, and mapping environmental monitoring locations. The second phase focuses on cave ecology research in the Cayo District. Students will conduct arthropod sampling, habitat mapping, bat acoustic monitoring, and trail-camera surveys. The Belize field experience serves as the foundation for two collaborative research projects focused on cave microclimates and environmental change and cave biodiversity and habitat relationships. Students may continue these projects through spring independent study and present findings at NAU UGRADS.

Awareness days

  • Bat Week

    24–31 October 2026 · Worldwide

Bat Week is an international, annual celebration designed to raise awareness about the need for bat conservation. Bats are amazing creatures that are vital to the health of our natural world and economy. Although we may not always see them, bats are hard at work all around the world each night - eating tons of insects, pollinating flowers, and spreading seeds that grow new plants and trees.
